Finding the Perfect Fit

The Importance of a Proper Mask Fit

Starting CPAP therapy can feel overwhelming, and it is common to experience challenges with your mask fit in the beginning. One of the most important factors in successful sleep therapy is wearing a mask that fits comfortably and creates a proper seal. If your mask is not fitting correctly, it is important to address the issue as soon as possible so you can get the most out of your treatment.

Some signs that your mask may not fit properly include:

  • Air leaks
  • Discomfort or pressure points
  • Skin irritation or redness
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty sleeping while wearing your mask

If you are experiencing any of these issues, here are a few tips to help you achieve a better fit.

Tips for Securing the Right CPAP Mask Fit

Choose the Correct Mask Size

Choose the Correct Mask Size

CPAP masks come in a variety of sizes, and many are packaged as a Fit Pack with multiple cushion sizes. Before assuming your mask is not right for you, check your Fit Pack to see if another cushion size provides a better fit.

Adjust Your Headgear Properly

Adjust Your Headgear Properly

Your mask should fit snugly without feeling overly tight. Headgear straps that are too loose can cause air leaks, while straps that are too tight can create discomfort and pressure marks. For the most accurate fit, make any adjustments while lying in your normal sleeping position with your CPAP machine turned on.

Check for Air Leaks

Check for Air Leaks

A properly fitting mask should create a secure seal against your skin. If you find yourself tightening the straps too much to stop leaks, you may need a different cushion size or a different headgear size instead of making the mask tighter.

Consider a Different Mask Style

Consider a Different Mask Style

Not every mask works for every sleeper. Depending on your breathing habits, sleeping position, and comfort preferences, you may benefit from trying a:

  • Full face mask
  • Nasal pillow mask
  • Nasal mask

If you are unsure which style is best for you, our Sleep Coach team is here to help.
